The Best 4x4 Trails to Drive in Winter: 17 Desert and Florida Routes, Each Paired With a Year-Round Camp

Best 4x4 trails to drive in winter, by state: 17 desert and Florida routes checked with BLM, NPS and USFS, each paired with its nearest year-round camp.

Quick Answer: The best 4x4 trails to drive in winter are low desert and Florida routes, not mountain passes. Of the 246 trail listings in our directory, 22 have a seasonal window covering December through February, plus 61 tagged year-round. We checked 17 of the 22 with their agency, all in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas and Florida. One of them, Big Bend's Old Ore Road, is closed right now.

The Best 4x4 Trails to Drive in Winter: 17 Desert and Florida Routes, Each Paired With a Year-Round Camp

Nine hours and forty minutes. That's about how long the sun stays up over Death Valley on the December solstice (our math, using the standard sunrise formula at 36.5 degrees north). In late June it's about 14 hours and 39 minutes. That five-hour gap is the whole winter trip in one number. You get less daylight, colder nights, and a campground that has to be open when you roll in after dark.

Meanwhile your rig sits in the driveway with a full tank, and you're searching for the best 4x4 trails to drive in winter.

Our trail directory gives every trail a best-season window, the months we rate as prime for driving it. We kept the 22 trails whose seasonal window runs through December, January and February; year-round tags come later. Five of the 22 aren't in the table: Kissimmee Prairie (the state park site blocked our check), Tonto National Forest Backcountry (a forest-wide listing), White Sands Backcountry (no official vehicle route we could match), Valley of Fire Backcountry Roads (the park keeps vehicles on approved routes) and Last Chance Canyon (no BLM status page we could find). We checked the other 17 against the agency that runs each one: the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the National Park Service (NPS), or a state park. Last, we paired each trail with the nearest campground in our directory that is open all year.

Why the Winter 4x4 Season Starts This Week

The desert season opens in dated pieces. At Death Valley, Furnace Creek Campground takes reservations Oct 15 through Apr 15. Stovepipe Wells Campground stays in its seasonal closure until Oct 23. The two-way section of Titus Canyon Road closes Oct 27. Over in Big Bend, NPS lists Cottonwood Campground as open Nov 1 through Apr 30 only.

Nevada State Parks says Valley of Fire closes to every visitor from December 1 through December 14, every year, and takes no camping reservations for those dates.

The Honest Truth: We Checked Our Own Labels Against the Agencies

A best-season window is a rating, not a gate schedule. Old Ore Road is rated as a winter trail in our data, but the Big Bend conditions page, last updated Oct 19, 2026, lists Old Ore Road under weather-related closures until further notice. River Road East and River Road West are on the same list. Black Gap Road is closed from 2025 flood damage.

We ran the same check on the campground side. On Oct 20 we checked 33 campground records in our directory for Death Valley, Mojave, Big Bend and Big Cypress against the seasons NPS publishes. Nine had the year-round question backward. One was only half right, and one had no label at all. That's 11 of 33 that weren't a clean match, exactly one in three (our count).

The errors run both ways. A duplicate Emigrant Campground record in our data says "All Year," but NPS lists Emigrant as closed indefinitely. A Big Bend Cottonwood record says "All Year," but it's open November through April only. Going the other way, Rio Grande Village, Midway, Wildrose and Hole-in-the-Wall are all tagged "Seasonal" in our directory, but NPS says each one is open year-round. The camp column below uses the agency's word wherever we checked it.

Here's the last surprise. On the Death Valley and Big Bend closure lists we read, mud and washed-out roads came up more often than snow. Hunter Mountain Road in Death Valley is closed for mud. NPS says the Darwin Falls road is "completely gone in many places" and will likely stay closed until Summer 2027. Big Bend's Black Gap Road closed after 2025 flooding. When a desert road goes soft, a 4x4 can get you in and still not get you out.

The 17 Best 4x4 Trails to Drive in Winter, by State

"Our rating" and "Best season" come from our trail pages. Status and fees come from the land manager, checked Oct 20, 2026. Camp is the nearest campground listed as open all year, measured in straight-line miles from the trail's GPS point (our math), so expect more miles by road. OHV means off-highway vehicle. An SVRA is a California State Vehicular Recreation Area, a state park built for off-road driving.

California: The Deepest Winter Bench

Ocotillo Wells is the easy on-ramp. California State Parks says the SVRA is about 85,000 acres, open 24 hours a day, with open camping anywhere in the unit for up to 30 days a calendar year and no fees. Anza-Borrego next door has 500 miles of dirt roads, per California State Parks, but Coyote Canyon is closed, and only street-legal vehicles are allowed in the park.

The Mojave Road is the big trip. NPS calls it about 150 miles, mostly inside Mojave National Preserve, and says the full length usually takes three days. NPS says every vehicle in the preserve must be street legal with current registration, so side-by-sides and other non-street-legal OHVs are out. NPS lists Mid Hills Campground as open year-round at $20 a night, with reservations required since Jan 1, 2025.

For Johnson Valley, BLM says the OHV area covers 96,000 acres, and about 53,000 of them are shared with the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms. Check the training schedule first. BLM says vehicles must be registered or permitted to operate in California, with a green sticker or license plate displayed. Ryan Campground in Joshua Tree is 34.2 miles away, and NPS requires reservations there all year, $30 a night.

In Death Valley, the NPS conditions page is the document to read. Furnace Creek is open all year at $30 a night for a standard site, per NPS.

Arizona: Close to Town, Heavy on Paperwork

Table Mesa has the closest camp pairing on this list: North Phoenix RV Park, 2.9 miles out. If you'd rather sleep for free, BLM's Little Pan Staging Area, off I-17 exit 236, has free primitive camping and two vault toilets.

Bulldog Canyon takes more planning. USFS describes 34,000 acres with about 20 miles of open routes, and you need a Tonto OHV Permit from Recreation.gov for motorized use. The camping order in the table also covers First Water Road off SR 88, so Apache Trail campers should plan on Queen Valley or a developed site.

On the Apache Trail itself, the Canyon Lake drawdown closure runs Sept 8, 2026 to Feb 28, 2027. It closes Tortilla Campground and the Canyon Lake recreation sites, but USFS says SR 88 remains open. Up at Roosevelt Lake, USFS lists Cholla Campground as year-round at $25 for a single site, with odd-numbered sites reservable Nov 1 through Mar 15.

Nevada, Texas and Florida

Logandale is the best first winter trip for Las Vegas. Valley of Fire's campgrounds are 6.1 miles away, outside the Dec 1 to 14 closure. Nevada State Parks charges $20 a night for Nevada vehicles and $25 for out-of-state. Gold Butte is the long haul: BLM says the monument covers 296,937 acres.

In Texas, Big Bend Ranch State Park is open while Old Ore is closed. TPWD says the park has 70 miles of unmaintained dirt roads for high-clearance four-wheel drives, plus drive-up primitive campsites.

Florida's dry season is the window. NPS says Big Cypress runs dry from November through April, and Midway Campground is open year-round at $24 for a tent site or $30 for RV. In Ocala, the USFS Lake Delancy West OHV campground has 30 sites at $10 a night.

Winter Driving: What Changes When It's Cold

Getting there. The trail is warm; the pass on the way may not be. In California, Caltrans sets three chain levels. At R2, 4WD and AWD vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels can skip chains but must carry them. At R3, everyone chains. Before you buy, read our snow chains for 4x4 trucks guide. The 2025 F-150, Bronco and Tacoma manuals allow rear-axle chains only, and only on the tire sizes each lists; Ford approves no chains on the Raptor's factory tires.

Airing down. Airing down means letting air out of your tires so they spread out and grip, and it's how you cross sand at Ocotillo Wells or Nellis Dunes. Our air-down PSI guide lists 15 to 18 PSI for deep snow in a lighter rig and 18 to 20 PSI in a heavier one. On standard wheels, it sets a floor of 10 to 12 PSI for a light rig and 14 to 15 PSI for a heavy one. Air back up before highway speeds.

Stopping. Four-wheel drive helps you go, not stop. Scrub your speed before a downhill, not in the middle of it. On an icy grade, check what your owner's manual says about engine braking before you downshift.

Snow in the desert. NPS warns that winter snow or ice can make the Mojave Road impassable. It also says most of the road has no reliable cell phone coverage and recommends two or more vehicles, so one can pull the other out. Big Bend's rule fits every trail on this list: "Never leave the pavement without full 4x4 capability with good tires, good spare, jack, and water."

Who Should Drive These, and Who Shouldn't

Go if you have a street-legal 4x4 with low range, a full-size spare and room for water, and you're willing to check one official conditions page the night before.

Skip it or wait if you're driving an AWD crossover. NPS calls the Mojave Road not appropriate for AWD SUVs. Also wait if your plan depends on Valley of Fire from Dec 1 to 14, or on Old Ore Road.

Bottom Line

The best 4x4 trails to drive in winter are in the low desert and Florida, and we checked 17 of them with the agency that runs each. Treat any season tag, ours included, as a starting point. On Oct 20 we found Old Ore Road closed, Valley of Fire shut Dec 1 to 14, and 11 of the 33 NPS campground records we checked in four parks out of step with the agency. Pick a trail from the table, read its agency page the night before, and book the camp first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best 4x4 trails to drive in winter?

Low desert and Florida routes. In our 246-trail directory, 22 trails have a seasonal window covering December through February, plus 61 tagged year-round. The 17 we checked with a land manager include the Mojave Road, Death Valley, Ocotillo Wells, Logandale and Big Bend Ranch.

Can you off-road in Colorado in winter?

Not on the trails we list. All 10 of our Colorado trails have a best season ending by October, and Engineer, Imogene and Black Bear are rated July through September. Head south instead.

Is Old Ore Road in Big Bend open?

No. The NPS conditions page, last updated Oct 19, 2026, lists Old Ore Road as closed for weather until further notice, along with River Road East and West.

Do I need snow chains to reach desert trails in winter?

You might if your route crosses a pass under chain control. In California, 4WD with snow-tread tires on all four wheels can skip chains at R2 but must carry them, and everyone chains at R3.

What tire pressure should I run in snow off-road?

Our air-down guide lists 15 to 18 PSI for deep snow in a lighter rig and 18 to 20 PSI in a heavier one. On standard wheels, the floor is 10 to 12 PSI for a light rig and 14 to 15 PSI for a heavy one.

Is Death Valley good for off-roading in winter?

Yes, with closures. Furnace Creek is open all year, but per the park's Oct 15, 2026 road update, Titus Canyon's one-way section and Hunter Mountain Road are closed, and the two-way section closes Oct 27 through December.

Which winter trails need a permit?

Bulldog Canyon needs a Tonto OHV Permit, Ocala needs a National Forests in Florida OHV pass, and Big Cypress needs an NPS ORV permit.
