4x4 Playground is an independent off-road planning site built and run by Abe Choe. It exists because most of what comes up when you search for trails, campsites, or build advice is a dealer blog, a forum thread from 2014, or a listicle written by someone who has never aired down a tire. We wanted the version a knowledgeable friend would give you across a campfire: what actually works, what it costs, and what the brochure left out.

Why this site exists
This whole thing started with a simple problem: I have a five-year-old daughter, and I wanted us to spend more time outside together. I started looking for places to camp and trails we could explore, and I kept hitting the same wall. The good stuff was scattered across half a dozen apps, most of it was behind a paywall, and the rest felt like it was written by people who had never actually aired down a tire. I could not find one place that had it all.
So I decided to build it.
At first it was just a trail and campground directory, the resource I wished I had when I was planning weekends with my daughter. But as I got deeper into it, my background in the aftermarket industry kept showing up. I had spent years around wheels, tires, suspension, and overland gear, working with brands and watching how products actually get built and marketed. I realized I could do more than list trails. I could build the tools I actually use, write about the products I would recommend to a friend, and explain the stuff the brochure leaves out.
That is how 4x4 Playground became what it is now: trails, campsites, calculators, build guides, and honest gear coverage, all in one place, built by someone who is out there trying to use it too.
What we publish
240+ trails with difficulty, length, season, GPS, and the build you actually need. 7,400+ campgrounds across all 50 states, matched to nearby trails. 13 free calculators for tire size, gear ratio, wheel fitment, lift cost, and build budgets. Long-form guides and honest vehicle reviews written for people who leave the pavement.
How we make money, and how we don't
We do not sell parts. We do not take money for rankings, and no brand can buy a verdict. We may earn a commission from clearly disclosed affiliate links on products we would recommend anyway, and we may publish clearly disclosed sponsored gear tests. In both cases the disclosure sits at the top of the page, and the sponsor sees the review when you do. If that ever changes, this page will say so first.
100% independent. No parts sold, no sponsored rankings. Disclosed affiliate links and disclosed sponsorships never change a verdict.
How articles get made
Every article starts with research: manufacturer specs, owner forums with real mileage on the vehicle, trail reports from people who ran the route that season, and direct conversations with the brands and builders involved. Software helps us draft, check numbers, and catch errors. The judgment and the final call belong to Abe, who reviews every piece before it publishes and puts his name on it. If we get something wrong, email us and we will fix it and note the correction.
Brands we write about
We cover brands like Tuff Stuff Overland, Atturo Tire, and Compound Wheels because we think their products are worth your attention, not because they pay us. As of today, we have published zero sponsored posts and no brand sponsors this site. If that ever changes, the post will say so at the top.
