    Tire Size: The Biggest Factor

    Larger tires increase rolling resistance (more rubber on the ground), rotational mass (heavier to spin up), and aerodynamic drag (bigger frontal area). The combined effect is significant.

    Rotational Mass: Weight You Feel Twice

    Weight on a spinning wheel hurts MPG roughly 1.5x more than the same weight sitting in your bed. This is because the engine has to both accelerate the vehicle forward AND spin the heavier wheel/tire combo. Tire weight matters more than most people think.

    45–55 lbs

    C-rated AT tires (e.g., Falken Wildpeak AT3W, BFG KO2 in LT-C). Minimal MPG penalty. Best for daily-driven builds.

    MIDWEIGHT

    60–70 lbs

    D/E-rated AT and lighter MT tires. Noticeable from a stop. Extra 0.5–1 MPG loss vs. lightweight equivalent.

    HEAVY

    75–90 lbs

    E-rated 37"+ MT tires (e.g., Nitto Trail Grappler, Toyo MT). Significant acceleration lag. Budget 1–2 extra MPG loss.

    Roof Racks, Light Bars & Aero Drag

    Aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with speed. At 70 mph, a roof rack with a rooftop tent is the single biggest MPG killer on most builds, more impactful than the tire change itself.
