Tillamook State Forest is managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry, which lists more than 250 miles of OHV riding opportunity, considerably more than the 80 plus our record carried. The riding is divided into named areas rather than spread across the whole forest, and the distinction decides whether a full-size rig is legal. Browns Camp and Jordan Creek are open to full-size four-wheel drive. Diamond Mill is primarily single-track motorcycle terrain, and Trask is the fourth main area. Rogers Camp is the central staging point most people use. Terrain is coast range at its wettest: steep clay and rock climbs under dense Douglas fir, deep ruts, root steps, and creek crossings, with rain possible in any month and mud a near constant from October through May. Oregon's equipment rules apply. An Oregon ATV Operating Permit is required, the sound limit is 96 dBA, and Class II vehicles, meaning full-size 4x4s, must carry a two pound dry chemical fire extinguisher. Safety flags are specifically required in sand dune areas such as Sand Lake and are not mandated for the forest trails in ODF's guides, so do not assume the dune rules carry over. Seasons vary by area. Browns Camp generally runs April through October and Jordan Creek from Memorial Day into mid-September, while Rogers Camp and Diamond Mill stay open year round. Check the ODF motorized trails page before you commit to a specific area, because the seasonal windows and individual trail closures change with logging activity and storm damage. Portland is roughly an hour and a half away, so weekends fill. Tillamook and Forest Grove bracket the forest for fuel and supplies, and the coast is close enough that a rainy trail day and a beach afternoon fit into the same weekend.
