Medano Pass Primitive Road is the back door to Great Sand Dunes National Park, climbing from the San Luis Valley over a 10,040-foot pass through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The route begins in deep sand at the dunes' base, requiring aired-down tires and momentum, before transitioning to rocky mountain terrain with six creek crossings of varying depth. The juxtaposition of massive sand dunes against snow-capped peaks is one of the most surreal landscapes in Colorado. The pass itself offers dispersed camping with views of both the dunes and the Wet Mountains to the east.
