Rampart Range Road
Rampart Range Road is an easy 60-mile gravel route along the Front Range through Pike National Forest, from Garden of the Gods north toward Sedalia. A stock high-clearance 4x4 or AWD with all-terrain tires handles it. The south end, Forest Road 300 from the Garden of the Gods gate to Forest Road 306, is closed to motor vehicles every year from December 1 to April 1.

Rampart Range Road stretches 60 miles along the Front Range foothills, connecting Garden of the Gods to Sedalia through Pike National Forest. This is Colorado's most accessible mountain road adventure, offering stunning views of Pikes Peak and the Continental Divide without extreme difficulty. The well-maintained gravel road is suitable for most vehicles, though rain and snowmelt can create challenging conditions. Countless dispersed camping spots line the route, making it perfect for weekend getaways from the Denver and Colorado Springs metro areas.
Fun Facts
Rampart Range Road was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.
The road runs along the geological boundary between the Rockies and the Great Plains.
Devils Head Fire Lookout, accessed from the road, is one of the last staffed lookouts in Colorado.
The area was heavily logged in the 1800s to build Denver and the railroads.
Know before you go
- The Pike-San Isabel National Forests closure order covers National Forest System Road 300 from the gate in Garden of the Gods to its junction with Road 306, Rampart Reservoir Recreation Area Road. The order runs through April 1, 2027 unless rescinded.
- Pikes Peak Ranger District: 719-636-1602.
- Rain and snowmelt can make the gravel harder going. Our best-season window is May to October.
