The Wheeler Peak backcountry encompasses the highest terrain in New Mexico, where the Sangre de Cristo Mountains push above treeline into alpine tundra more commonly associated with Colorado's fourteeners. Forest roads climb through ponderosa pine and spruce-fir forests to high meadows with views stretching across the Rio Grande Gorge to the Jemez Mountains. The combination of high desert culture in Taos, mountain wilderness above 12,000 feet, and centuries of Native American and Spanish colonial history creates a uniquely rich adventure destination.
