COLORADO TRIP ESSENTIALS
Best Time to Visit
July through September only. Passes are snowed in October-June. Late July through August has the most reliable weather.
Altitude Awareness
You'll be driving above 12,000 ft. Drink extra water, avoid alcohol Day 1, and watch for altitude sickness symptoms.
Where to Camp
Dispersed camping on BLM and National Forest land. South Mineral Campground near Silverton is popular. Ouray KOA for amenities.
Vehicle Prep
Alpine Loop: Stock 4WD works. Imogene: Skid plates recommended. Black Bear: Lockers, 33"+ tires, experienced driver required.
Weather Windows
Afternoon thunderstorms are daily in summer. Start early and be off summits by 1pm. Lightning at 13,000 ft is serious.
