Ophir Pass offers a gentler introduction to Colorado's San Juan Mountains, connecting Silverton to Highway 145 via an 11,789-foot crossing. Compared to the Alpine Loop's higher passes or the extreme nature of Black Bear, Ophir is achievable by most high-clearance vehicles with careful driving. The trail passes through classic alpine terrain including wildflower meadows, spruce forests, and remnants of the region's mining heritage. For families or those new to mountain driving, this is the perfect entry point to San Juan adventure.
