The Santiam Wagon Road follows the historic 1860s route that pioneers used to cross the Cascade Range before modern highways were built. Today, the road is a gentle forest road that winds through spectacular old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar, crossing the Cascades at Tombstone Pass. Historical markers along the route tell the story of pioneer hardship and determination. The easy terrain and rich history make this a uniquely rewarding overlanding experience.
Fun Facts
The Santiam Wagon Road was the primary route across the Cascades from 1867 through 1939.
Toll was $3 per wagon in the 1870s, equivalent to about $80 today.
The road was so important that it sparked Oregon's first major highway funding debate.
