Ochoco National Forest is central Oregon's best-kept secret, a quiet expanse of ponderosa pine parkland, wildflower meadows, and gentle mountain terrain that sees a fraction of the traffic headed to the nearby Cascade destinations. The forest's low, rolling terrain makes for comfortable, easy overlanding through landscapes that look more like Montana than the typically dense forests of Oregon. Rockhounding for thunder eggs and agate is a popular activity, and the forest's numerous small lakes provide fishing and swimming.
