Reading Tire Size
A tire marked "285/70R17" tells you:
- 285: Tread width in millimeters
- 70: Aspect ratio (sidewall height as % of width)
- R: Radial construction
- 17: Wheel diameter in inches
Calculating Overall Diameter
For 285/70R17:
- Sidewall height: 285 × 0.70 = 199.5mm = 7.85"
- Total diameter: 17 + (7.85 × 2) = 32.7"
Wheel Width Guidelines
Tire manufacturers specify acceptable wheel width ranges. Using wheels outside this range affects performance and safety.
General Rules
- Ideal wheel width is 85-100% of tire tread width
- Wider wheels stretch tires, narrower wheels create bulge
