Uwharrie National Forest

The motorized riding in Uwharrie National Forest is concentrated in one place: the Badin Lake OHV Trail Complex, managed by the Forest Service in the North Carolina piedmont near Troy. The complex holds roughly 17 miles of designated motorized trail, and the Forest Service names each one, which makes trip planning straightforward. The list includes Daniel (TR390), Dickey Bell (TR91), Dutch John (TR90), Falls Dam (TR96), Rocky Mountain Loop (TR92), Sawmill (TR93), Slab Pile (TR79), Wolf Den (TR79), and Lakeview (TRBL69). Dickey Bell and Daniel are the ones that earn Uwharrie its reputation, with rock ledges and off-camber climbs that will use up a stock rig's clearance. The trails are open to full-size four-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes, with ATVs defined as machines under 60 inches wide. Two planning facts matter more than any trail description. A valid trail pass is required and must be carried by the rider, sold through Recreation.gov. And the complex is seasonal: it typically opens April 1 and closes December 15 each year, so a January trip is a non-starter. Camping keeps you close to the trailheads, with Badin Lake Campground, Arrowhead Campground, and Art Lilley Campground all serving OHV visitors. The forest itself sits in the Uwharrie Mountains, an ancient worn-down range of red clay, quartz, and hardwood that turns hard in the fall. Red clay is the defining surface here and it is greasy within minutes of rain, which is when the ledges on Dickey Bell go from technical to genuinely difficult. Troy and Albemarle are the nearest towns for fuel and food, and Charlotte is close enough that summer weekends draw a crowd.
