The Moosehead Lake region represents Maine's North Woods at their most authentic: a landscape of dense boreal forest, pristine waterways, and logging roads that stretch for hundreds of miles. The roads range from well-maintained gravel to barely passable two-tracks cutting through spruce-fir forest to remote ponds and river crossings. Moose sightings are virtually guaranteed, and the region's dark skies make it one of the best stargazing destinations in the eastern US. This is genuine wilderness overlanding on the East Coast, with a frontier atmosphere that has changed little since Thoreau explored the area in the 1850s.
