Francis Marion National Forest spreads across 260,000 acres of South Carolina's Lowcountry, a landscape of live oaks draped in Spanish moss, blackwater creeks, and sandy forest roads. Named for the Revolutionary War hero who used these swamps as his guerrilla base, the forest preserves a uniquely Southern ecosystem of longleaf pine savannas, cypress swamps, and maritime forests. Forest roads wind through landscapes that have changed little since colonial times, passing historic plantation sites and Civil War earthworks. The proximity to Charleston adds world-class dining to any adventure.
