El Malpais Backcountry traverses one of the most geologically unique landscapes in the American Southwest. Ancient volcanic eruptions created vast fields of sharp, twisted lava rock interspersed with sandstone bluffs, natural arches, and ice caves. Backcountry roads wind between these lava flows, providing access to a landscape that looks more like another planet than New Mexico.

El Malpais means 'the badlands' in Spanish, named by early explorers who struggled to cross the lava.
The most recent lava flows are only about 2,000 years old, geologically yesterday.
Ice caves within the lava maintain temperatures below freezing year-round.
