BIG BEND ITINERARIES
Adventure plans for the remote Texas desert.
Desert Escape
Experience the remote beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert. Solitude, dark skies, and ancient volcanic landscapes await.
Drive in from Lajitas or Presidio. Enter the park and explore the River Road (FM 170) before setting up camp. This is one of the most scenic drives in Texas.
Stock up in Alpine or Marfa before entering. There's nothing out here.
Full day exploring interior roads. Visit the Sauceda ranger station and hike to volcanic formations. Watch for javelina and roadrunners.
Pack all food and water. Minimum 2 gallons per person per day.
Morning trail run, then head out via Terlingua Ghost Town. Grab a beer at the Starlight Theatre before the long drive home.
Terlingua's restaurants are worth the wait.
Pro Tips
- This is REMOTE - no cell service, no services, no rescue. Be prepared.
- Big Bend Ranch requires an entrance fee and vehicle pass
- Dark sky designation means incredible stargazing - bring a tripod
BIG BEND TRIP ESSENTIALS
Best Time to Visit
October through April. Summer temps exceed 100°F and are dangerous. Winter nights can drop near freezing in the desert.
Where to Camp
Big Bend Ranch has designated backcountry sites. Terlingua offers private campgrounds with showers. Hidden Falls has on-site camping.
Water is Critical
There is NO water in Big Bend Ranch. Bring 2+ gallons per person per day. Overpack - your life depends on it.
Vehicle Prep
Stock 4WD handles most Big Bend roads. Hidden Falls requires more capability. Carry 2 full-size spares for the remote desert.
Photo Spots
FM 170 River Road is stunning. Terlingua Cemetery at sunset. Dark sky photography anywhere in Big Bend.
Remote Reality
No cell service for 100+ miles. Nearest hospital is hours away. Travel in groups and leave a trip plan with someone.
