    Why Alignment Matters

    Proper alignment ensures your tires meet the road at the correct angle, your steering wheel stays centered, and handling remains predictable. Misalignment accelerates tire wear and compromises safety.

    Common Symptoms of Misalignment

    Vehicle Pulls to One Side

    If your truck drifts left or right on a flat, straight road without steering input, alignment is likely off. Test on a level road – crowned roads naturally cause slight drift.

    Possible causes: Uneven caster or camber between sides, toe misalignment, or uneven tire pressure.

    Steering Wheel Off-Center

    When driving straight, your steering wheel should be centered. If it's rotated to one side, toe or steering gear position needs adjustment.

    Note: This can occur after a tire rotation if the alignment was compensating for uneven tire wear.

    Uneven Tire Wear

    Perhaps the most telling sign. Different wear patterns indicate specific alignment issues:

    • Inner edge wear: Excessive negative camber or toe-out
    • Outer edge wear: Excessive positive camber or toe-in
    • One-sided wear: Camber problem on that wheel
    • Feathering (sawtooth pattern): Toe misalignment
    • Diagonal wear: Combination of issues or worn components

    Steering Doesn't Return to Center

    After turning, the steering wheel should naturally return to center. If it doesn't, or returns slowly, caster angle is likely insufficient.

    Vibration at Highway Speeds

    While often a balance issue, severe alignment problems can cause vibration, especially combined with worn tires or suspension components.

    Loose or Wandering Steering

    Feeling like you constantly need to correct the steering suggests alignment or suspension problems. This becomes worse with speed.

    Causes of Misalignment

    Road Impacts

    • Hitting potholes hard
    • Curb strikes
    • Off-road impacts with rocks
    • Accidents (even minor)

    Suspension Changes

    • Installing a lift kit
    • Replacing suspension components
    • Worn out bushings or ball joints
    • Sagging springs

    Normal Wear

    • Components wear over time
    • Bushings compress and shift
    • Springs settle with age

    Diagnosing Specific Issues

    Caster Problems

    Symptoms:

    • Steering doesn't return to center
    • Wandering at highway speeds
    • Vehicle pulls toward side with less caster

    Common on: Lifted vehicles without caster correction

    Camber Problems

    Symptoms:

    • Inner or outer tire edge wear
    • Vehicle pulls toward side with more positive camber
    • Reduced grip in corners

    Common on: Vehicles with worn upper control arm bushings

    Toe Problems

    Symptoms:

    • Rapid tire wear (faster than other alignment issues)
    • Feathered tread pattern
    • Steering wheel off-center
    • Darting or instability

    Common on: Vehicles after tie rod end replacement

    Self-Diagnosis Methods

    String Test (Toe)

    1. Set string lines parallel to vehicle sides
    2. Measure from string to front and rear of each tire
    3. Front measurement larger = toe-in
    4. Front measurement smaller = toe-out

    Tire Wear Inspection

    1. Run hand across tread from inside to outside
    2. Feel for smooth one direction, rough the other (feathering)
    3. Measure tread depth at inside, center, and outside
    4. Compare all four tires

    Steering Wheel Test

    1. Find a flat, straight road
    2. Drive straight at consistent speed
    3. Briefly release steering wheel (safely)
    4. Note any pulling or steering wheel position

    When to Get Professional Alignment

    • Any symptom described above
    • After installing new tires
    • After suspension work
    • After a significant impact
    • Every 12,000-15,000 miles (maintenance)
    • Annually at minimum

    • Pre-alignment inspection of suspension components
