Why Lifts Affect Alignment
Lifting your truck changes suspension geometry. What was perfectly aligned at stock height is now wrong, causing tire wear, handling issues, and safety concerns. Alignment after a lift isn't optional – it's essential.
What Changes with a Lift
Caster
Caster is the angle of the steering axis viewed from the side. Lifts typically reduce caster, causing:
- Reduced steering return-to-center
- Wandering or vague steering
- Decreased stability at highway speeds
Camber
Camber is the tilt of the wheel when viewed from the front. Lifts can push camber positive or negative depending on design, causing:
- Inner or outer edge tire wear
- Pulling to one side
- Reduced contact patch on turns
Toe
Toe is whether the fronts of the tires point in or out. While lifts don't directly change toe, other adjustments affect it:
- Toe-out causes outer edge wear and instability
- Toe-in causes inner edge wear and resistance
- Incorrect toe dramatically accelerates tire wear
Alignment Specifications
Independent Front Suspension (IFS)
Most modern trucks use IFS. Target specs after lifting:
- Caster: +3° to +5° (positive is good)
- Camber: 0° to -0.5° (slightly negative)
- Toe: 1/16" toe-in total
Solid Front Axle (SFA)
Jeeps and older trucks with solid axles have different concerns:
- Caster: +4° to +7° (more is often better)
- Camber: 0° to +0.5° (slight positive)
- Toe: 1/16" to 1/8" toe-in total
Geometry Correction Components
Adjustable Control Arms
Quality lift kits include adjustable upper or lower control arms that allow caster and camber correction. Essential for 3"+ lifts.
Cam Bolts
Eccentric bolts that allow adjustment within a limited range. Good for minor corrections on smaller lifts.
Adjustable Track Bars
On solid axle vehicles, adjustable track bars center the axle and affect handling. Critical for proper alignment.
Drop Pitman Arms
Correct steering geometry on solid axle vehicles. Reduce bump steer and improve steering feel.
The Alignment Process
Pre-Alignment Inspection
Before aligning, the shop should check:
- Ball joints and tie rod ends for wear
- Control arm bushings
- Wheel bearing play
- Steering box/rack condition
- Tire pressure (set to spec)
Alignment Procedure
- Vehicle on level alignment rack
- Sensors attached to all four wheels
- Steering wheel centered and locked
- Rear alignment set first (if adjustable)
- Front caster and camber adjusted
- Toe set last
- Test drive and verify
Finding a Qualified Shop
Not all alignment shops understand lifted vehicles. Look for:
- Experience with lifted trucks specifically
- Modern 4-wheel alignment equipment
- Willingness to explain the process
- Knowledge of your specific suspension
- References from other lifted truck owners

Common Alignment Problems
Insufficient Caster
Symptom: Steering doesn't return to center, wanders
Fix: Adjustable upper control arms or caster correction brackets
Excessive Negative Camber
Symptom: Inner tire edge wear, pulls under braking
Fix: Adjustable upper control arms, ball joint spacers
Incorrect Toe
Symptom: Rapid tire wear, steering instability
Fix: Simple adjustment at tie rod ends
When to Realign
- Immediately after installing a lift
- After suspension settles (2-4 weeks)
