Understanding Coilover Adjustments
Coilovers give you adjustability, but only if you know how to use it. Understanding preload and damping is essential to getting the most from your investment.
Preload: What It Is
Preload is the tension on your spring when the coilover is at rest. It's adjusted by moving the lower spring perch up or down on the threaded body.
- More preload: Spring is more compressed at rest
- Less preload: Spring is more relaxed at rest
Important: Preload does NOT change ride height significantly on properly designed coilovers. It affects spring behavior, not final height.
Ride Height vs Preload
This is the most common misunderstanding:
- Ride height: Adjusted by moving the entire coilover body position OR changing spring rates
- Preload: Affects how the spring engages, not final height
To raise your vehicle, you need stiffer springs or different collar positions, not just more preload.
Setting Proper Preload
The Goal
Set preload so the spring is just engaged at full droop, not loose, not compressed.
The Process
- Fully extend the coilover (off the vehicle or wheels hanging)
- Adjust the lower spring perch until the spring just touches the upper seat
- Add 2-5mm of preload (spring lightly compressed)
- Lock the collar in place
Why This Matters
- Too little preload: Spring can rattle or unseat at full droop
- Too much preload: Reduces available droop travel
Damping: What It Is
Damping controls how fast the shock moves. It converts the energy of suspension movement into heat.
- Compression damping: Controls how fast the shock compresses (hits a bump)
- Rebound damping: Controls how fast the shock extends (after the bump)
Types of Damping Adjustment
Single Adjustable
One knob controls both compression and rebound together. Simple but limited.
Dual Adjustable
Separate controls for compression and rebound. More tuning options, more complexity.
Bypass
Multiple tubes with individual adjustments. Maximum control for racing/competition.
Setting Damping: Starting Points
Daily Driving
- Compression: 30-40% from soft
- Rebound: 40-50% from soft
Prioritize comfort over control. You want the suspension to absorb bumps smoothly.
Mixed Use (Trail + Street)
- Compression: 50% (middle)
- Rebound: 50% (middle)
Start in the middle and adjust based on feel.
Off-Road / Trail
- Compression: 60-70% from soft
- Rebound: 60-70% from soft
More damping prevents bottoming and keeps tires planted.
High-Speed Desert
- Compression: 70-80% from soft
- Rebound: 70-80% from soft
Maximum control to prevent blowing through travel.
Tuning Method
- Start soft: Begin with all adjustments near the soft end
- Drive: Test on your typical terrain
- Identify issues:
- Bottoming = add compression
- Bouncy/pogo = add rebound
- Harsh ride = reduce both
- Adjust one at a time: Make small changes, retest
- Repeat: Until it feels right
Common Mistakes
Running Too Stiff
Many people crank damping to max thinking "firmer is better." This actually hurts performance by preventing the suspension from working.
Ignoring Rebound
Rebound is often more important than compression. Too little rebound creates a bouncy, uncontrolled feel.
Not Adjusting for Load
Your settings should change based on load. Fully loaded overlanding requires more damping than empty daily driving.
Set It and Forget It
Coilovers benefit from regular adjustment based on conditions. Don't just set them once.
