Rising dramatically from the flat Oklahoma prairie, the Wichita Mountains are an ancient island of granite that feels more like Africa than the Great Plains. The wildlife refuge protects free-roaming herds of bison, longhorn cattle, and elk against a backdrop of rounded granite peaks and boulder-strewn grasslands. Backcountry roads wind through the refuge past prairie dog towns and grazing herds to panoramic overlooks.

The Wichita Mountains contain some of the oldest rocks in Oklahoma at over 500 million years old.
The wildlife refuge was established in 1901 and now supports around 650 bison.
Mount Scott at 2,464 feet is the highest point in southwestern Oklahoma.
