Uwharrie National Forest protects a landscape of almost incomprehensible age, these rolling hills are the eroded stumps of a volcanic mountain range that once rivaled the modern Rockies in height. Today they're gentle forested ridges of pine and hardwood, threaded with red clay trails that provide some of the best intermediate off-roading in the Southeast. The forest's gold mining history adds human interest, with abandoned prospect holes and the remnants of America's first gold rush visible throughout.
