Water Is the One Thing You Cannot Improvise
You can skip a meal. You can sleep in your truck. You can duct-tape a broken bumper and limp to the next town. But you cannot improvise water. Dehydration degrades decision-making within hours and becomes dangerous within a day. Every other piece of overlanding gear exists to support your ability to stay hydrated, fed, and functional.
Water management is not glamorous. Nobody posts their jerry can collection on Instagram. But experienced overlanders will tell you it is the single most critical system on their rig, and the one that gets the most attention during trip planning.
How Much Water Do You Actually Need?
The standard guideline is 1 gallon per person per day for drinking. That number climbs in hot weather, at altitude, and during physical activity. Here is a more realistic breakdown:
- Drinking -- 1 gallon per person per day (1.5 gallons in hot weather or high altitude)
- Cooking -- 0.5-1 gallon per day for a couple
- Dish washing -- 1-2 gallons per day
- Personal hygiene -- 1-2 gallons per day (basic wash, teeth brushing)
- Solar shower -- 5 gallons per shower (if you use one)
A couple on a 5-day trip with no resupply needs roughly 25-35 gallons at minimum. That is 200-280 pounds of water. Weight adds up fast, which is why identifying resupply points along your route is just as important as carrying capacity.

Jerry Cans: The Overlanding Standard
Scepter (Canadian military spec, $25-$35) and Wavian (NATO-spec steel, $50-$80) jerry cans are the most popular water storage for overlanders. The 5-gallon size is the sweet spot: heavy enough to be useful, light enough to carry when full (42 lbs).
Why jerry cans work:

Tanks offer higher capacity in a single container and can integrate with 12V pump sinks for running water at camp. The downsides: they are heavy, expensive, harder to clean, and represent a single point of failure. If a 40-gallon tank develops a crack on a washboard road, you lose everything.
Collapsible Containers
Sea to Summit Watercell X and MSR Dromedary bags store flat when empty, making them ideal for extra capacity on longer stretches without adding permanent weight. They are fragile compared to hard containers but weigh almost nothing when not in use. Keep them as supplements to your primary storage, not replacements.
Water Filtration Systems
If your route includes any possibility of refilling from natural sources (streams, lakes, springs), you need a filtration system. Even crystal-clear mountain water can harbor Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and bacteria that cause serious illness.

Gravity Filters: Best for Camp
Fill the dirty bag, hang it from a tree or your vehicle, and let gravity push water through the filter into a clean reservoir. The Platypus GravityWorks 4L ($70-$80) filters about 1.5 liters per minute with zero effort. You can filter 4 liters while setting up camp.
Sawyer Gravity System is a budget alternative that uses their proven Squeeze filter in a gravity configuration. Both systems handle bacteria and protozoa but not viruses. For most North American backcountry water, that coverage is sufficient.
Pump Filters: Best for On-Trail
The MSR MiniWorks EX ($80-$100) is the classic pump filter. It handles silty, turbid water that would clog lighter filters, and the ceramic element is field-cleanable. Pumping is physical work (you will feel it after filtering 10 liters), but it works in any water condition.
The Katadyn Hiker Pro ($70-$90) is lighter and faster but less field-serviceable. Both are excellent choices depending on your preference for durability vs. weight.
UV Purifiers: For Clear Water

Chemical Treatment: Emergency Backup

Finding Water in the Field
Springs
Spring water emerging directly from the ground is typically the cleanest natural source. The ground acts as a natural filter. Still filter it (contamination is possible at the surface), but springs are generally safer than surface water. Mark spring locations as waypoints in Gaia GPS; they are invaluable on remote routes.
Streams and Rivers
Moving water is generally safer than stagnant. Collect upstream from camps, trails, and livestock areas. Faster-moving, colder streams tend to have lower bacterial loads. Always filter and treat.
Lakes
Lake water requires extra caution. Algae blooms (some toxic), higher bacterial loads near shore, and agricultural runoff are all concerns. Collect from deep water away from shore, filter through a pre-filter first, and use your primary filtration system.
Snow
Snow requires fuel to melt (it takes more than you expect), but it is usually very clean. Avoid surface snow, colored snow, and snow near roads. Pack snow tightly into a pot and melt slowly to avoid scorching your pot.
System Maintenance
- Sanitize storage containers -- Monthly for regular-use containers. Use a diluted bleach solution (1 teaspoon per gallon), let sit 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly.
- Backflush filters -- After every trip. Follow manufacturer instructions exactly.
- Replace filter elements -- Before they become restricted. A slow filter tempts you to drink unfiltered water.
- Prevent freezing -- Store filters above freezing. Ice crystals create microscopic cracks that pass pathogens.
- Check seals and caps -- Inspect jerry can gaskets and tank fittings regularly. A slow leak on a bumpy road can drain gallons before you notice.
- Mark containers clearly -- Label filtered vs. unfiltered water containers. Confusion here causes illness.
