    What Offset Means

    Nearly every factory truck runs positive offset, often a lot of it. A stock JL Wrangler is about +44. A stock Silverado 1500 20-inch is +28. A stock Tundra is +60, which is why Tundra owners get such a shock from anything aftermarket. The rule: more negative sits farther out, more positive tucks deeper in.

    What Backspacing Means

    Backspacing is the distance from the mounting pad to the back lip of the wheel, in inches. It tells you how far the wheel reaches inward toward the suspension. More backspacing pulls the tire toward the control arms and frame. Less pushes it out toward the fender.

    Offset and backspacing describe the same thing from opposite ends. Offset is what the industry prints on the casting. Backspacing is what off-roaders think in, because it maps straight to the clearance that matters: inner barrel to upper control arm at full droop, or to the coilover at full lock.

    The Conversion Most Calculators Get Wrong

    A wheel sold as a 17x9 is not 9 inches wide. The 9 is bead seat to bead seat. The flanges add about half an inch per side, so the true width is closer to 10, and every published backspacing figure is measured from that true outer lip. Plug the advertised width into a formula and you land half an inch short. Half an inch is the difference between clears and rubs.

    On a 37, where precision always matters, pull the manufacturer spec sheet rather than trusting a calculator that asked for "width" and never said which one.

    Why Bigger Tires Change the Number

    A taller, wider tire needs room in every direction. A stock wheel with factory backspacing puts a 35 so far inboard that it hits the upper control arm at lock or the fender liner on compression. Most trucks that go up in tire size need less backspacing, which walks the tire out and away from the suspension.

    Stock full-size trucks sit around 5.5 to 6 inches of backspacing. The 4.5 to 5 inch range is the standard move for 35s. A JL on 37s usually wants 4.5 or less.     Dirty Life, the race-bred end of the family, ships its 17x9 in -12 and -38. The -12 moves a 35 about 2.2 inches outboard of a stock JL wheel, roughly what it takes to clear the control arms and no more. The -38 moves it 3.2 inches out, which is a JK on 37s with a wide-track front end. Buy it for a stock-width JL to look tough and you learn about scrub radius the first time the truck wanders under braking. A 22x12 -44 pushes the outer lip more than 4 inches past a stock Silverado 20x9 once you count the wider barrel.     Too little backspacing pushes the tire into poke. Beyond the look, it grows the scrub radius, the relationship between the steering axis and the center of the contact patch that factory engineers tuned carefully. The effects arrive in order: heavier steering at low speed, more kick through the wheel over ruts, faster bearing and tie rod wear, and a truck that tugs under braking when the tires hit different surfaces. It also throws mud up the doors. None of it makes the truck undrivable. All of it scales with how far you moved from stock, and a -38 on a truck that needed -12 pays it every mile.
