The Lift Height Trap
"How much lift should I get?" is one of the most common questions in the off-road world. Unfortunately, the answer is often "less than you think."
Many builders go too tall, then spend years dealing with the consequences. Let's help you avoid that mistake.
Start With Tire Size
Your desired tire size should dictate your lift height, not the other way around. Lift is just a means to fit tires.

What Happens When You Go Too Tall

Every inch of lift raises your center of gravity, making the vehicle less stable in turns and on side slopes. This isn't just about rollover risk, it affects how the vehicle feels to drive.
Driveline Stress
Higher lifts put CV joints, U-joints, and driveshafts at steeper angles. This causes vibration, accelerated wear, and eventual failure.
Geometry Problems
Stock control arms are designed for factory height. Lift them too much and you create caster, camber, and pinion angle problems that require expensive correction.

2-2.5" lift with 33-35" tires. This setup maintains reasonable daily driving characteristics while providing legitimate capability improvement.
Weekend Wheeler
3-3.5" lift with 35-37" tires. Enough for serious trails without completely sacrificing street manners. This is the most popular setup for a reason.
Dedicated Trail Rig
4"+ lift with 37-40" tires. For vehicles that prioritize capability over daily convenience. Expect compromises on-road.
Use Case Analysis
"I want to look good"
2-2.5" with 35s looks great without the downsides of extreme height. The proportions work well on most trucks and Jeeps.
"I drive forest roads"
2" leveling kit with 33s is plenty. Most forest roads don't require significant lift.
"I do moderate rock crawling"
3-3.5" with 35-37s provides the articulation and clearance you need without going overboard.
"I compete or do extreme trails"
4-6" with 37-40s. You know the compromises, and capability is priority one.
The "Start Small" Strategy
Consider starting with less lift than you think you need:
- It's easier (and cheaper) to add lift later than to remove it
- You'll learn what you actually need through experience
- Many people discover they never needed the extreme setup
- You can sell quality components if you upgrade later
Fender Modifications Change Everything
Before committing to more lift, consider fender modifications:
- Fender Flares: Allow wider stance without lift
- Fender Trimming: Gains 1-2" tire clearance for free
- High-Line Fenders: Dramatic clearance improvement (Jeeps)
A 2.5" lift with trimmed fenders often fits the same tires as a 4" lift with stock fenders.

For 90% of builders, 2.5-3.5" of lift with 35" tires is the right answer. It provides significant capability improvement, looks great, and maintains reasonable daily driving characteristics.
Go bigger only if you have specific needs that require it, and accept the trade-offs that come with extreme height.
