Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area occupies an entire peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in western Tennessee and Kentucky. This is overlanding at its most relaxed, gentle forest roads wind through second-growth hardwood forest, past lakeside camping spots, and through open fields where elk and bison herds graze. The area's designation as a Dark Sky site makes it one of the best stargazing destinations in the eastern US.
Fun Facts
Land Between the Lakes was created by TVA when they dammed the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers.
The area's elk herd was reintroduced in 1996 after being absent from the region for 150 years.
LBL is one of only a handful of IDA-designated Dark Sky Places in the eastern US.
The 170,000-acre peninsula is the largest block of undeveloped forest between the Great Smokies and the Ozarks.
