What to expect
Sites are on level, sandy ground on the ocean side, separated from the beach by dunes. You get flush toilets, drinking water, unheated showers and grills, but no shade trees. Bring long tent stakes and bug spray, because NPS warns mosquitoes can be a problem.
Wood fires are not allowed in the campground. Charcoal in a grill, stove or other self-contained unit is fine. Generators are allowed outside quiet hours, which run 10 pm to 6 am.
Know before you go
- Each site allows up to six people, two vehicles and two tents. If your RV is over 25 feet, you may have to park your second vehicle in the auxiliary lot or buy a second site. Check-in is 3 pm and check-out is noon.
- Stay limits: 14 days from Easter Sunday to the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and 30 days total in the off-season.
- Same-day walk-ups are allowed, but you pay online or by calling Recreation.gov at 877-444-6777. Rangers cannot take payment. Ferry reservations may be needed in peak season.
- Correction: our older record listed this campground as seasonal with 135 sites. NPS lists 136 sites, open year round.

How do you get to Ocracoke Campground?
By ferry or aircraft only. The campground is off NC Route 12, three miles east of Ocracoke Village and ten miles west of the Hatteras inlet ferry terminal.
Can you have a campfire at Ocracoke Campground?
Not a wood fire. Only charcoal cooking fires in a grill, stove or other self-contained unit are allowed.
